FAA pilot certificate requirements set clear milestones for age, medical eligibility, flight experience, knowledge testing, and practical testing, but the right sequence depends on whether you want to fly for personal travel, build a professional aviation career, or add credentials to an existing certificate.
For most future professional pilots, the path begins with a Private Pilot Certificate and continues through instrument, commercial, multi-engine, and instructor training. Start With the Right FAA Certificate Path

You must be at least 16 years old to solo an airplane, or 14 for a glider or balloon. You must also be able to read, speak, write, and understand English well enough to safely communicate with air traffic control and complete training. There is no maximum age to begin. Students start in their teens, after college, during career transitions, and after retirement.
Your instructor will not authorize a solo flight simply because you have reached a certain number of hours. You must demonstrate consistent aircraft control, sound judgment, airport knowledge, and the ability to handle normal and emergency procedures. Solo is a major milestone, but it is only one part of a larger training program.
Medical certificate considerations
For most airplane students pursuing a Private Pilot Certificate, a third-class FAA medical certificate is the practical starting point. It confirms that you meet the medical standards required to exercise private pilot privileges. Pilots flying commercially generally need a second-class medical certificate, while airline pilots exercising Airline Transport Pilot privileges need a first-class medical certificate.

Under Part 61 training rules, the FAA minimum is 40 hours of flight time. That includes at least 20 hours with an instructor and 10 hours of solo flight. Under Part 61, an airplane commercial certificate generally requires 250 total flight hours. A Part 141 commercial course can reduce that total to 190 hours for eligible students who complete the approved curriculum. Commercial training also requires specific experience, such as pilot-in-command time, cross-country experience, complex or technically advanced aircraft training, and longer cross-country flights.
The 190-hour versus 250-hour distinction matters, but it should not be the only factor in choosing a program. A lower regulatory minimum is valuable when paired with reliable aircraft availability, strong instructor continuity, effective ground preparation, and a schedule you can sustain. Delays caused by maintenance shortages, inconsistent instruction, or limited aircraft can erase the advantage of any advertised timeline.
Flight Instructor and ATP Requirements
For a career-track pilot, flight instructor certification is often the most practical next step after commercial training. Certified Flight Instructors are authorized to train new pilots and, importantly, can be paid to do so. Instructing builds flight experience, sharpens technical knowledge, and develops the decision-making and communication skills employers value.
A flight instructor applicant must generally be at least 18, hold a commercial or airline transport pilot certificate, pass the Fundamentals of Instructing and Flight Instructor knowledge tests, and complete a demanding practical test.
